Looker Studio Is Now Data Studio (Again)

If you've been using Looker Studio for client reporting, you might have noticed the name change. Google rebranded it back to Data Studio, and it's not just cosmetic.

The bigger shift is what Data Studio is becoming. It's now the central hub for Google's data assets - reports, BigQuery conversational agents, and data apps built in Colab notebooks, all in one place. If you run reports across Google Ads, Sheets, and BigQuery, that's actually useful.

There are two versions now. The free tier works the same way it always did - build reports, share dashboards, connect your data sources. Nothing changes for existing users. Your reports, data sources, and assets carry over automatically.

Data Studio Pro is the paid version, aimed at teams that need tighter security controls and built-in AI features. You can buy it through the Google Cloud console or Google Workspace Admin Console.

Where does Looker fit? Google is keeping Looker as the enterprise BI platform for organizations that need governed data and a central semantic model. Data Studio sits alongside it for personal exploration and ad-hoc reporting. Two tools, two different use cases.

built-in AI features

For most agencies, the free version is probably all you need. If you're already building client dashboards in Looker Studio, nothing breaks. Just a new name and a broader vision behind it.
