Accurate Call Tracking

Dynamic number insertion, call events pushed into GA4 and the ad platforms, and call outcomes imported as conversions, so phone leads get credited to the campaign that produced them.

Why Click-to-Call Tracking Isn't Enough

Most Google Ads accounts track click-to-call and stop there. That number is wrong in three separate directions.

You miss everyone who doesn't tap. Desktop and tablet users read the number and dial it on their phone, and that call never appears in Ads or analytics. Depending on your traffic mix, that's often close to half your calls. Google then calculates cost per lead based on the half it can see, and your bidding strategy optimizes around it.

Not every tap becomes a call. People hit the button and cancel. Ads count the click anyway.

And not every call is a lead. Some callers want opening hours, directions, or your support team. Counting those as conversions teaches the platform to buy more of them.

What's Included

Number Setup

  • Provider configuration in CallRail, WhatConverts, CallTrackingMetrics, or the platform you already run
  • Dynamic number insertion with a session-level pool sized to your traffic
  • Source-level numbers for offline, print, and direct mail where you need them
  • Fallback behavior when the pool runs out, so nobody ever sees a broken number
  • NAP consistency checks so local SEO doesn't suffer from swapped numbers

Attribution

  • Session and click ID association at the moment of the call
  • gclid and msclkid carried through to the call record
  • Cross-domain and multi-page journeys handled before the call happens
  • Call events sent to GA4 with duration, source, and first-time caller as parameters
  • Google Ads and Microsoft Ads conversion import with a duration threshold that filters out wrong numbers

Outcome Tracking

  • Call outcome tagging by your team or through provider scoring
  • Qualified calls imported as a separate conversion action from raw call volume
  • CRM sync so calls land on the same record as form leads
  • Value assignment where the outcome maps to revenue
  • Recording and transcript setup with consent handling by region

Reporting

  • Call performance by campaign, keyword, landing page, and device
  • Caller location, duration, and first-time versus repeat caller breakdowns
  • Text message and form attribution where your provider supports it
  • Missed call and after-hours reporting
  • Combined view so form and phone conversions sit in one place

What Changes Once It's Running

Your highest-value leads probably come in by phone, and standard analytics capture none of them. Once calls carry a click ID, you can trace a conversation back to the keyword, ad, and campaign that produced it, and compare paid search against social, organic, and direct on the same terms.

That data then goes back into the ad platforms. Without it, smart bidding optimizes toward form fills and cheap clicks, because that's all it can see. With qualified calls imported as their own conversion action, the algorithm starts buying the traffic that generates real conversations.

The reporting side gets more honest too. Cost per lead calculated on half your leads has been overstating your paid campaigns for as long as you've been running them, and correcting it usually reshuffles which channels look like they're working.

Why It Matters

Plenty of businesses take most of their leads by phone and attribute none of them. The call comes in, someone writes the name on a pad, and the campaign that paid for it never gets credit. Meanwhile, the form-fill campaigns look like the only thing working, so budget drifts toward them.

Duration thresholds do a lot of quiet work here. Counting every call as a conversion teaches the platform to buy wrong numbers and vendor cold calls. Setting a floor, and better still importing only the calls your team marked qualified, changes what the bidding learns.

We usually pair this with server-side tracking, since the same click IDs that make call attribution work are the ones ad blockers and browser restrictions strip out first.
