PostHog Analytics Implementation
Product analytics and funnels.
Most analytics setups tell you what happened. PostHog tells you why.
Google Analytics shows you traffic numbers. It doesn't show you which users dropped off halfway through your client's checkout flow, what they clicked before leaving, or whether the button copy they changed last month actually moved conversion.
That gap is where most marketing decisions go wrong. Agencies pull reports, present numbers, and recommend changes based on aggregate data. Then the same problems come back next quarter because nobody understood what users were actually doing in the product.
PostHog combines event tracking, session recordings, A/B testing, SQL querying, and external data imports into one platform. It's one of the most capable tools available for understanding user behavior, and most of the core functionality is free. The catch is that getting it configured to actually answer business questions takes real technical work. A basic PostHog install and one that drives decisions are two very different things.
That's the setup we do.
What we set up for you
Product Analytics and Event Tracking
PostHog's autocapture records clicks, page views, and form interactions automatically, but autocapture alone creates noise without structure. We instrument custom events based on what matters for your client's specific business: signup completions, feature activations, upgrade clicks, checkout abandonments. You get a clean event taxonomy so every report reflects something real.
From there, we build the analytics views that inform decisions. Funnel analysis shows exactly where users fall out of key flows. Trend graphs track feature adoption and engagement over time. Retention cohorts show whether users return after day 7, day 30, or disappear after the first session. Path analysis maps the sequences users take before they convert or before they leave.
Session Recordings
Session recordings show exactly what real users do. Not what the funnel data implies, but what actually happens. You see every click, every scroll, every moment where someone hesitates before abandoning a form. We configure recordings to capture the right sessions without creating noise or running up costs, and we link them to your analytics so when a funnel shows a drop-off, you can watch those specific sessions in the same platform without switching tools.
A/B Testing and Experiments
PostHog's experimentation tool is free and runs proper statistical significance calculations, which matters a lot when you're making decisions based on test results. You can test copy, layout changes, onboarding flows, or any variation where you want an actual answer instead of a gut call.
We build experiments tied to business outcomes rather than surface metrics. When a test concludes, the data gives you a clear direction.
SQL Access with HogQL
PostHog's SQL layer lets you write queries directly against your event data. Standard dashboards answer standard questions. SQL answers the ones nobody has built a report for yet. Which users completed three specific events in a single session? What's the conversion rate by traffic source and device type for users who signed up in the last 90 days and used a specific feature?
We build the queries your team and clients will actually use, document them, and save them as persistent insights so the answers are there when you need them, not buried in someone's notes.
Data Warehouse and External Source Imports
PostHog connects to 60+ external data sources. CRM records, payment history, support tickets, and offline event data can all live in the same platform as your behavioral analytics. When you can query a user's ad click alongside their purchase history and in-product behavior, you stop guessing at which marketing efforts actually drove revenue.
We handle the source connections and data pipeline configuration, and ensure imported data maps correctly so it's queryable alongside PostHog's native events.
Workflows and Automations
PostHog's workflow tools let you act on data rather than just view it. Trigger a webhook when a user hits a milestone, push enrichment data to your CRM when someone reaches a key event, or alert a Slack channel when a metric changes. We build the automations that connect PostHog to the rest of your client's stack so insights don't stay locked in a dashboard.
Custom Dashboards and Reporting
We build dashboards designed for the audience to use. Client-facing views focus on the metrics clients understand and care about. Internal dashboards give your team a deeper layer of analysis. Neither gets cluttered with the other.
What you can actually answer when this is set up
Where are users dropping out of the signup flow? Which features do retained users use most? Did the homepage redesign improve conversion or hurt it? What did the users who churned last month have in common?
These are questions that aggregate traffic reports can't answer. When your analytics setup can answer them, your recommendations carry more weight, and your clients see more value in what you're delivering.
Why SmartMetrics for PostHog
We already run PostHog as part of the SmartMetrics platform. We've built the integrations, worked through the instrumentation, and know what a thorough setup looks like compared to a surface-level one. For agencies already using SmartMetrics, PostHog implementation connects directly into your client portal data, giving you a richer picture of what's happening across every account.
For agencies not yet on SmartMetrics, PostHog implementation is available as a standalone service. Either way, you get a setup built to answer questions, not just generate reports.
